2002
The Sankofa Series
Statewide attention turns towards the Louisiana Purchase Bicentennial.
Leia Lewis conceives and produces The Sankofa Series, a 10-week arts
and humanities festival honoring the African American heritage of Louisiana;
presented by Pamoja Art Society. The festival features an artist residency
by Bamboula 2000, who teach and perform West African drumming and
dance. The Sankofa Series reaches 8,000+ people in Northwest Louisiana;
seeds the Pamoja Drum Circle; and confirms a regional need for African
Diaspora cultural arts programming.
2004
The Sankofa Legacy Tour
Leia Lewis organizes an educational and entertainment tour to historic Natchitoches, LA. Participants explore
the local African American and Cane River Creole heritage with visits to Melrose Plantation, Evergreen Plantation,
the Zydeco Festival.
Sankofa Vision, Inc. (SVI) is incorporated in the State of Louisiana as a nonprofit organization.
2005
Hurricane Katrina Relief
SVI volunteers, in association with the Linwood Village, coordinate free holistic health services, clothing donations,
community forums, and recreational arts for hurricane evacuees from New Orleans and the Gulf Coast region
displaced locally, as well as Shreveport citizens.
Hollyhock Scholarship
Leia Lewis completes professional leadership training at Hollyhock.
She participates in the workshop "How to Create a Learning Centre" and
receives business coaching by the founders and directors of Canada's
leading educational retreat center. This experience firms Leia Lewis'
capacity to direct Sankofa Vision, Inc.
Sankofa Gardens Established
SVI volunteers clear land to establish the Sankofa Gardens organic community garden and learning campus.
2006
Neighborhood Investment Program
SVI is awarded a competitive Neighborhood Investment Program grant from
the City of Shreveport, Office of Community Development, to develop
Sankofa Gardens and annual community events.
2007
Neighborhood Investment Program
SVI is awarded a competitive Neighborhood Investment Program grant from the City of Shreveport, Office of
Community Development, to expand Sankofa Gardens and community events.
Earth Day Fest!
SVI promotes the Spring/Summer garden planting as a family festival event
at Sankofa Gardens in conjunction with global observations of Earth Day.
Sankofa Saturday School
SVI volunteers establish an innovative children's garden program
with arts, academic, and cultural enrichment.

Sankofa Vision, Inc. Director receives Community Service Award.
Leia Lewis, SVI Director, is recognized by the National Sorority of Phi Delta
Kappa, Beta Alpha Chapter, as part of its annual Black History Scholarship

The Times
Sankofa Vision, Inc. is collaborating with the Louisiana
Tech University School of Architecture, Community Design
Assistance Center in 2009-2010. The university team is
creating a comprehensive "green-design" master plan of the
Sankofa Vision Community School and Sankofa Gardens
campus.
Special thanks to Ms. Alyssa Andres, who has taken on
Sankofa Vision, Inc. as the focus of her Masters in Architecture
graduate studies and thesis.
Sankofa Vision, Inc. Director is selected as a prestigious
GREEN FOR ALL FELLOW (www.greenforall.org) and works to
communicate the promise of a "green economy" strong
enough to lift people out of poverty.
Leia Lewis receives is honored for her role as a "40 UNDER 40"
community leader by the Shreveport-Bossier Chamber.
