Sankofa is a West African adinkra symbol and proverb that comes from the Ashanti people of Ghana.
It is drawn as a fancy heart or as a bird with feet that move forward and a head that looks backward.

The mythical Sankofa bird is often depicted keeping its egg in its beak for safety. The egg represents
future generations, who must be treasured and nurtured to continue family, community, and cultural
legacies.

Sankofa literally means "it is not taboo to return and get it." Sankofa is a symbol that reminds people of
the importance of learning from the past and using these lessons for building a good life.

There are many renditions of Sankofa. The art for the Sankofa Vision, Inc. logo was created by artist
Marcus Akinlana and features a stylized egret, a bird that  is common to Louisiana. The logo was
completed by graphic designer Missy Allen.
